22/3/13: Tyesha Mattis from East London Gymnastics has been crowned the 2013 Women’s Junior all-around British Champion with South Durham’s Amy Tinkler following in second and Notts Ellie Downie in third.

First year junior and 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Champion, Tyesha dominated the competition from start to finish. She began by performing the most difficult vault of the day, a strong double twisting Yurchenko and her difficulty on bars was equally impressive. She looked confident on beam as she moved smoothly through her skills and her powerful and complex tumbling on the floor was easily enough to take the title with a score of 55.050.

Tyesha: “I’m really happy with myself, I just wanted to try my best. Last year I was injured and just did bars, so to come and do all-around and win is amazing. I wasn’t too nervous which was good, I had a bit of an idea of how the competition was going and knew I was doing well and then to see the final results was brilliant, I’m really happy.”

Amy took the silver with some hugely difficult work across the four apparatus. A clean routine on beam with an almost flawless standing full twisting somersault and a floor routine packed with difficulty that included a double straight, full in pike out and a double pike somersault gave her an overall score of 53.800 and second place.

Amy: “I’m really happy - I went clean on all pieces and that what I was here for. I wasn’t expecting to take silver as I’m first year junior so it feels amazing. I was a little bit nervous coming in to it but the experience of competing in events like the Australian Youth Olympic Festival really helped me and I’m very proud of what I achieved.”

Ellie took the final podium place (51.550). She unfortunately had to count fall on beam on which was her first piece of apparatus but she fought back strongly on floor with some hugely difficult tumbling and had clean and confident performances on the bars and vault. The power she displayed was incredible and we will surely see some difficult skills as she progresses.

Ellie: “There were some really good routines today, vault was good and I’m happy with my new bars dismount but the fall on beam first piece set me back. My coach Claire just told me after that to go out on floor and show off and that’s what I did. Overall I’m happy and its set up the year well going into the British Teams event and then hopefully the European Youth Olympic Festival.”

Other notable performances came from East London’s Chantelle Halford who took 4th place with Amy’s South Durham teammate, Jade Armstrong who had a beautiful floor routine to qualify to Sundays finals and took 5th all-around. Europa’s Ellis O’Reilly took 6th place.

22/3/13: 2012 European all-around silver medallist, City of Leeds’ Nile Wilson was crowned the 2013 under 18 British Champion after some incredible performances across all six pieces of apparatus. In the under 16 category, South Essex’s Brinn Bevan stole the show, comfortably walking away with the title.

All-around

Under 18 (Junior)

Although eventually taking the title, Nile Wilson unfortunately had to count a fall on his first piece of apparatus – the p bars. He moved on confidently however with an outstanding high bar routine ending in a double twisting double straight and continued to excel, particularly on the floor where he posted a 14.800 to put himself in good stead for making the masters final on Sunday. His incredible depth of talent helped him take the title with a total score of 84.650.

2013 Australian Youth Olympic all-around silver medallist, Dominick Cunningham, started off strongly on the floor and showed great composure throughout the competition. Dom was consistent across all six apparatus and stayed inside the top group of gymnasts after each rotation as the competition progressed. He took the silver medal with a score of 83.150.

Exeter’s Jay Thompson carried a few errors but produced a confident overall performance to complete the podium. Jay was part of the 2012 gold medal winning Junior European team and this experience was evident as he fought through to score 80.900 and take the bronze medal.

Under 16 (Youth)
Brinn Bevan from South Essex was clean but slightly shaky throughout his p bars routine showing a few early nerves but he soon changed this into some incredible work. Brinn particularly excelled on rings where he outscored all of his competitors by a mark and a half to score a strong 14.450. He comfortably took the title with 83.650.

Europa’s Giarnni Regini-Moran showed some hugely difficult skills throughout the competition. His double twisting double back somersault on floor was a particular highlight. The 2013 English Champion took the silver with a score of 81.950.

Hamish Carter from the City of Birmingham completed the top three. He produced some extremely mature performances for such a young gymnast and took bronze with a total score of 78.800.

Quotes

Nile Wilson “It’s going really well for me at the moment, I made a few mistakes today but also had some outstanding routines that made up for it. I had great support from my friends and family in the arena, everyone shouting for me which really makes a difference.”

Brinn Bevan “I started up on vault really well but then had a disaster on p.bars. I’m really proud of how I came back from that and came out winning. To see that my score would have placed me second in the under-18 shows that I’m performing at a good level so im really happy.”

Whitlock and Jupp take senior British gymnastics title
...
23/3/13: First year senior, 15 year old Gabby Jupp from the Sapphire School of Gymnastics has been crowned the women’s senior British Champion after a confident performance at Echo Arena in Liverpool. In the men’s competition, newly crowned English Champion and double Olympic Medallist, Max Whitlock from South Essex comfortably took the title with some outstanding routines under pressure.

Max Whitlock looked calm and collected throughout to comfortably take the title. His well-executed floor routine was just one of his impressive performances which helped him to an overall score of 90.650.

Max “I’m well happy! To start the year by winning the English title, which has always been one of my main ambitions, and then to win the British is just crazy. I’m happy with all my routines, particularly vault which I've worked hard to improve and it’s paid off. It’s been important to me to prove to people I’m an all-around gymnast, the pommel will always be my strongest piece but I wanted to go out and show I can do all-around and hopefully that will give me a chance of perhaps doing it again at the Europeans or Worlds this year.”

2012 Champion, Southport’s Daniel Purvis had a strong start on the floor but had multiple problems on the p bars which today left him in second place (87.250).

Dan “Personally I was really happy with how things were going until I had a disaster on p.bars which cost me two marks and put me out of contention. It’s been hard coming back after the Olympics and adjusting to the new code of points and of course I’m disappointed to lose my title but not too unhappy and fair play to Max, he was brilliant and fully deserves it.”

A surprise placing was that of Leeds gymnast, Mathew Firth who picked up the bronze. He was consistent on all pieces of apparatus and took his chance when his competition fell. His strong performances earned him a podium place and a score of 83.700.

Matthew “I’m really really happy, I went clean on all pieces and that was the big aim. I hoped if things went well I could get the top six spot so to make the podium is fantastic. The aim of the competition was to prove to people that I’m strong all-around and that’s what I’ve done so it should set me up for more success in the future.”

2012 Olympic bronze medallist, Sam Oldham had to carry a few falls which left him in 4th but his experience and difficulty helped him finish strongly. Max’s South Essex team mate, Reiss Beckford continued to shine after his silver medal performance at the recent English Championships. However, he had to count a fall on the floor which pushed him out of the medals in 5th. Huntingdon’s Cameron Mackenzie finished in 6th.

Some of the gymnasts didn’t compete on all pieces of apparatus but still put in some world class performances.  2009 world silver medallist, Dan Keatings from Huntingdon only competed on the high bar, pommel and p bars but was outstanding on all three and took gold on each, proving he really is back on form. Powerhouse Theo Seager from Bury took the remaining titles on the rings and vault.

Women

Gabby started her competition with a beautiful floor routine, she had a few unsteady landings and an out of bounds but put in a clean performance to begin her challenge for the title. She continued with a well-executed full twisting Yurchenko on the vault and a confident performance on bars with her impressive full twisting double straight dismount. Finishing up on beam, her strongest piece of apparatus, Gabby did not disappoint. Although showing a few nerves early on she fought hard and went through with no falls to claim the title with an impressive total of 56.150.

Gabby “I’m so so happy I didn’t ever think I’d be senior British champion. Floor and vault were really good, bars I was a bit disappointed but to end on beam, even though it wasn’t perfect, suited me as it’s my strongest piece. As a first year senior to take the title is like a dream and as for the rest of the year hopefully I can now make the European team which would be a big step in my career.”

In the end it was City of Liverpool’s Charlie Fellows (54.900) who took the silver. Quietly confident she went about her businesses and put in clean routines on all four pieces off apparatus. She excelled particularly on the floor where she finished in the top qualifying spot with a score of 14.200.

Charlie “I’m really happy I went clean on all pieces, I was looking at some of the scores as the competition progressed but didn’t really know where I was standing and was just like wow when the results came up. The support was really good for me here having recently moved to the City of Liverpool gym club, it was a brilliant day for me.”

Notts Niamh Rippin completed the podium with 53.650. A well-established gymnast, Niamh is known for excelling on both the floor and vault but this time she produced an almost flawless all-around performance to take the bronze and make the all-around senior podium for the first time.

Niamh “This is my first senior all-around medal and it feels amazing. I was really focused today but knew on the final piece I had to perform to keep a podium spot which I did. As one of the more senior gymnasts out there today it feels really good to go out and prove myself and I couldn’t be more pleased.”

The Academy’s Ruby Harrold took 4th place. She shone on the bars with an outstanding routine that included some extremely creative skills. A fall on floor kept her out of the medals but her experience and expertise kept her inside the top six. First year senior, Georgina Hockenhull form Park Wrekin took 5th place, continually proving she is a consistent and reliable gymnast. Cardiff’s Raer Theaker finished in 6th.

Another notable performance came from Notts Becky Downie on the bars who only competed on this piece of apparatus. Her highly complex routine put her in the top qualifying spot with a 14.650.

2011 Champion Hannah Whelan had strong start on the vault with a solid one and a half twisting Yurchenko but moving on to the bars unfortunately had to carry two falls and another on the floor which left her in 8th place.

2013 British Championships - Event Finals
Gabby Jupp and Dan Keating were dominant in the event finals of the 2013 British Championships, each taking home two event titles.

The 2013 British Championships concluded today with individual event finals. Below is the recap from British Gymnastics.

24/3/13: The final day of the Men’s and Women’s British Championships saw the women battle it out in their respective age groups to be crowned individual apparatus champions, and the men battle to be event Masters.

In the Senior women’s competition, 2013 all-around champion, Gabby Jupp continued to shine taking two more gold medals on both the floor and beam. She also took silver on the bars behind established gymnast, 2008 Olympian Becky Downie from Notts. Niamh Rippin also from Notts took the final title on the vault for the second year in a row.

The men’s Masters finals took place alongside the women’s apparatus finals. The men use their results from the all-around to crown apparatus champions within the age groups but the masters are where any of the gymnasts who competed in the Under 16, Under 18 or Senior categories are ranked together to find the top 8 gymnasts from across the board. The final eight for each piece then battle it out to be crowned the master of that apparatus.

Dan Keatings stole the show taking two gold medals on both the P bars and Pommel horse, edging out Olympic bronze medallist on this piece of apparatus, Max Whitlock. This didn’t make it a bad day for Max though as he won the High Bar title. Bury’s Theo Seager also stood out winning both the Rings and Vault Masters with Huntingdon’s Sam Oldham victorious on the Floor.
