After over three months of fierce competition, countless hours in the practice gym, and two eventful semifinal rounds, the road to the National Championships ends for Super Six finalists Florida, Alabama, Oklahoma, Georga, LSU, and Nebraska. The Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex came alive tonight as fans watched the nation's best collegiete gymnasts leave their final marks on the 2014 NCAA season.
In perhaps the most evenly matched event in Championship history, the University of Oklahoma and the University of Florida end in a tie at the 2014 NCAA Final Championships with a team score of 198.175!
In what turned into a rat race for the top three slots, it was the final rotation that proved the most essential, and for Alabama, the most heartbreaking. Florida electrified the crowd on the floor and OU gave a stellar vault rotation, but it was frontrunner Alabama that fell in the last rotation. A fall from Diandra Milliner in the leadoff spot put the Crimson Tide on shakey ground. Nerves running high, Alabama looked nervous the entire rotation, and in the end, anchor Kim Jacob pressed over on her unique mount falling and costing Alabama their rank.
With Oklahoma and Florida taking the top spot, landing in third with a score of 197.6 is LSU while Alabama will settle for fourth with a 197.55. Georgia ends fifth with a 197.05, and Nebraska rounds out the competition field positioning themselves as sixth in the nation with a 196.5.
In the first rotation both Florida and LSU posted impressive scores on the vault and bars respectively. Each school received three scores over a 9.9. Florida's stand out routine was Bridget Sloan's stuck yurchenko full. For LSU, the bars did not go perfectly, but persistance kept the Tigers in the game. LSU earned a 49.4 on the bars. Georgia started their night on the beam receiving a 49.075. A fall early in the line up put the GymDogs on edge, and they couldn't seem to regain their composure or momentum they displayed in the semifinal rounds.
Alabama enters the arena in the second rotation to a roaring home crowd. Bama played to their audience and pulled an amazing four 9.95 routines on the event. On the beam, the LSU Tigers kept their cool and grabbed a 49.325. Both Rheagan Courville and Jessie Jordan handled the pressure well and posted scores of 9.9 despite the excitement happening next to them on the floor exercise. The Oklahoma Sooners also joined the competition in the second rotation on the bars. Freshman McKenzie Wofford experienced some trouble on her jeager release, but the team rallied and still managed a great event total of 49.5 making them real contenders in the final. Over on the vault, Nebraska earns a 49.275 with Jessie DeZiel posting the top score of a 9.925 for the Huskers.
Alabama, Florida, and Oklahoma all turn on full gear in the third rotation. On the vault, Alabam earns a 49.475 with Kim Jacob leading the pack with a stuck yurchenko 1 1/2. Alabama shows they can accomplish great execution alongside the big skills. Florida makes a statement on the bars coming out in a way we have yet to seen in this year's post-season. Florida did not count one score below a 9.9 on the event. Oklahoma looked poised on the beam demonstrating the artistry for which they are known. Rebecca Clark looked truly refined as she earned a 9.925. A redeeming score after a disappointing semifinal showing. At the midway point on the meet only 0.225 tenth separate the top three teams on the leader board making it anyone's title to take!
Florida continued to distance themselves from LSU in the fourth rotation posting a giant 49.5 event score. The success tastes even sweeter as Bridget Sloan redeems herself from a fall in the semifinal to earn a 9.95 tonight. LSU kept themselves in the hunt making up some ground with a 49.55 on the floor exercise. The last performer of the rotation, Lomincia Hall commanded the arena with her captivating floor exercise demonstrating the clean routine she's proven she's capable of throughout the regular season. Georgia went for high difficulty on the vault with Brandie Jay rolling out the first yurchenko double of the competition! Jay receives a 9.775 for her effots, and Georgia takes a 49.275 on the event. On the bars, Nebraska experienced some troubles with their leadoff Desire Stephens sufferring a fall and Amanda Lauer fighting to save a missed hand in the overshoot connection. Nebraska gets a 48.875 on the bars.
Oklahoma came out swinging in the fifth rotation securing a 49.6 on the floor exercise. The Sooners did not count a single score less than a 9.9, and Haley Scaman proved her talent earning a 9.95. Alabama also continued their push for the front of the pack with three 9.95s on the bars from Rebecca Clark, Sarah DeMeo, and Kim Jacob. LSU wrapped their meet on the vault. While showing strong flight in the air, landings proved elusive for the Tigers. Courville and Ashleigh Gnat take matching 9.9s, and LSU heads to a bye with a 197.6 team where they wait and hope that Alabama, Florida, or Oklahoma falters in the final event. Nebraska finished their campaign on the beam. The Huskers could not repeat last night's seemingly perfect line-up. After suffering several wobbles, the Huskers earned a 49.125 on the event and ends with a 196.5 team score overall.
The train comes of the tracks in the final rotation as Alabama, Florida, and Oklahoma all race to the finish. Florida and Oklahoma both capture the audience with inspiring routines on the floor and vault respectively. Stuck landings and smooth finishes puts Oklahoma into the top, and Florida executes just as well on the floor. But in the shocker of the night, and likely of the weekend, Alabama's Diandra Milliner falls from the beam on her handspring layout series in the lead off position. Unable to shake off the nerves, Alabama looks tight throughout the rest of the rotation, but hangs on hoping not to count the score. In the end, Alabama experienced a heart breaking loss. Anchor Kim Jacob falls on her press mount edging just over the other side. A determined rest of the beam performance could not take back the mistake. Alabama would fall out of the race leaving OU and UF to become Co-Champions on the 2014 NCAA Team Competition!
A truly remarkable and memorable event for all these teams tonight. A hearty congrats ought to go to all the teams who participated in the night's events. The tight race demonstrates how talented and evenly matched each of these teams are on any given night.
And so concludes the Team Final competition. Stick with Gymnastike to hear the latest recaps and reactions to tonight's momentous event. And be sure to come back tomorrow as the Individual Event Finals begin starting at 2PM CST.

The first rotation started out strong for Oklahoma on the balance beam. While arguably the most challenging apparatus of the four, the Sooners proved up to the challenge posting a team score of 49. 35. Stellar performances from Taylor Spears (9.925) Chayse Capps (9.9), aloowed the Sooners to drop anchor Rebecca Clark's score of a 9.7. Clark fought hard to recover a crooked front aerial to backhandspring swing down beam series. Georgia also came out strong in the first event with a 49.35 posted on the vault. Highligts from the squad came from a stuck 1 1/2 from Brandie Jay earning her a 1 1/2 and huge flaired out yurchenko full from Lindsey Cheek for a 9.9 posting. On the bars, Michigan posted a competitive 49.325. Joanna Sampson secures the top scoring spot for her team with a 9.9. And on the floor, Stanford incurred a bit of difficulty, their highest scores notching a 9.85 from Shona Morgan and Melissa Chuang. Stanford headed to the vault with an event score of 49.025
As Oklahoma and Georgia headed to a bye, LSU stepped into the National arena to start their bid for the National title. Despite an impressive 49.35 event score, LSU did not show their true potential. Jessica Savona shone on the floor posting a 9.925 followed closely by teammate Ashleigh Gnat who earned a 9.9 for her great routine that included a beautiful piked full in. However, perhaps the most anticipated routine of the night, Lomincia Hall, fell a bit flat. While the dance was nothing less than spectacular, Hall bounded out of her last pass (a double back) and didn't quite put the exclamation mark on the routine she was hoping for. Despite the small error, Hall still notched a 9.85 to aid in the Tiger's fight. Over on the bars, Illinois experienced small set backs themselves, having a fall early in their line up. However, the Fighting Illini rallied back to earn a 48.725 on the event. The University of Michigan opened the door for opportunity after Lindsay Williams and Briley Cassanova suffered falls on handspring layout flight series. All American Joanna Sampson notched a 9.85 to lead the Wolverines, and Michigan walked away from beam with a 48.35. Standford moved over to the vault where Danielle and Nicolette McNair proved the highlights with matching 9.85s. Stanford earned a 49.025 on the vault.
In the third rotation, Oklahoma returned to the spotlight on the floor exercise. Oklahoma posted the highest event score of the night to this point with a great 49.575. Haley Scaman and Maileana Kanewa led the Sooners with matching 9.95s. But not a single athlete on the Oklahoma squad failed to impress as the lowest score the team counted was a 9.85. LSU took charge of the vault in the third rotation earning a 49.35. Huge height helped the Tigers land big scores. Top point earners for LSU came from Rheagan Courville and Ashleigh Gnat with a pair of 9.9s. Georgia nabbed a 49.3 on the uneven bars with Senior Lindsey Cheek leading the way with a 9.925. Illinois continued making progress on the balance beam again suffering a fall from their anchor Sunny Kato, but solid routines from the rest of the squad spared Illinois from having to count the fall. Illinois gained a 48.8 on the bars. Oklahoma and LSU post strong leads at the halfway mark of the event.
Georgia highlights the fourth rotation as they prove they are true contenders for the NCAA Finals. After a less than perfect routine from Kiera Brown, senior Lindsey Cheek proved she was capable of handling the pressure tacking a 9.9. Mary Beth Box also rallied a 9.9 on the balance beam for the GymDogs. The Oklahoma Sooners continued to prove themselves capable on the vault with a 49.325. Haley Scaman led the charge with a 9.9 of her own. Michigan looked sharp on the floor, but it was All American Joanna Sampson that stole the show with a 9.95. Sampson continues to impress and will be a routine to watch for in the event finals. Stanford pulled a strong 49.3 on bars with top earnings going to Kristina Vaculik (9.925) and Shona Morgan (9.9).
Stanford finishes their day putting up a fight on the beam. Kristina Vaculick posts a 9.9 with a routine highlighted with a stuck roundoff double twist dismount. Stanford caps off their day with a 196.6 team score. Michigan also wraps their competition competing on the vault. While Sachi Sugiyama led the squad with a 9.9 and the team overall demonstrated great difficulty, a few too many steps on the landing holds them at a 49.3. Michigan ends the competition with a team score of 196.425. LSU demonstrated strong capability on the bars, but small mistakes added up quickly for the team. Rheagan Courville notched a 9.9 with a routine marked by lovely lines in the jeager release and a stuck full in dismount. However, LSU leaves the bars behind with a 49.225. The University of Illinois gains their highest score of the night with a 49.2 on the floor exercise. They will conclude their day on the vault.
In the final round of competition, the leaders proved their place. LSU ended on the balance beam where they showed small mistakes, but high difficulty routines. Rheagan Courville's routine takes center stage featuring a standing arabian, a leg up turn, and a front aerial to sissone to gainer dismount to boot. LSU finished with a 49.175 on the beam giving them a team for of a 197.1. Oklahoma shone on the bars with Taylor Spears earning a 9.9. However, much like LSU small mistakes and missed opportunities meant Oklahoma walked away with a 49.25 making their final score a 197.5. Georgia rallied on the floor exercise and proved themselves in this game pushing themselves into second place. High scores from Brandie Jay (9.925), Cat Hires (9.9), and Mary Beth Box (9.9) gave Georgia the edge over LSU. Illinois finished out their night on the vault with a 49.075. As was the theme of the night and likely this Championships, perfection wins and no team can afford to make mistakes, even the minor ones if they want to chase that team title.
With Oklahoma, Georgia, and LSU taking the top three spots, that means that despite strong routines throughout the competition Stanford (196.6), Michigan (196.425), and Illinois (195.8) will fall just short and end their run for the Championship title.
The first three players are set for Satuday’s Super Six, but session two promises just as thrilling a match-up. The second Semifinal will get underway at 7PM CST. Watch as reigning national champs Florida take on Alabama, Utah, UCLA, Penn State, and Nebraska as three more teams compete to round out the Super Six.
