Bridgette Caquatto of USA wins 2011 Pan American Games All Around Title

Bridgette Caquatto of USA and Legacy Elite Gymnastics won the women’s all-around title at the 2011 Pan American Games, making her the seventh consecutive American to win gold in the event.   “This is just amazing,” Caquatto said. “It feels just as amazing as it did the other day when the whole team won first too. I’m just so happy.”   Posting a final score of 55.875, Caquatto joins Shawn Johnson (2007), Chellsie Memmel (2003), Morgan White (1999), Shannon Miller (1995), Stephanie Woods (1991) and Sabrina Mar (1987), as the seventh U.S. woman to earn this Pan Am title.   Claiming silver was the young Guatemalan standout Ana Sofia Gomez who led the all around after the first day of competition. She vaulted a yurchenko double twist to score 14.525 and she earned the highest beam score of the competition, 14.350, to finish her day with a 55.425 all around score. Kristina Vaculik of Canada took the bronze medal with 54.775.    In the first rotation, Caquatto was first up on floor posting a score of 13.400 with a front double full to front layout. She watered down her vault to a clean and easy yurchenko full to score 14.075, then went to bars where she nailed a huge routine packed with release moves to score a 14.725, the highest of the competition. This shot her up to first place heading into the final event. Caquatto fought to stay on the beam on her back handspring layout step out series and finished well to earn a 13.675 and the all around title. Click here to watch Caquatto's bar routine.    Peng Peng Lee of Canada was in the hunt for a medal but hit her feet on the ground on her Bhardwaj transition (full twisting pak) on bars. Elsa Garcia of Mexico came back from a fall on her beam series to finish 5th place in front of the home crowd. Brandie Jay of USA finished in 6th place in her first international competition highlighted by a 14.825 for her yurchenko double twist on vault.  All Around Results:  1. Pan American Games Men's Team Final: Results, Recap, & Finalists

Team Finals competition at the 2011 Pan American Games concluded with the Brazilian men capturing the gold medal ahead of Puerto Rico and the United States. Both Brazil and Puerto Rico competed their same teams who finished 13th and 14th respectively just two weeks ago at the World Championships in Tokyo.    The Brazilian gold medal team is made up of Francisco Barreto, Petrix Barbosa, Pericles Da Silva, former World Floor Champion Diego Hypolito, Sergio Sasaki who posted the top all around score of the day with 87.70, and 2011 World Rings silver medalist Arthur Zanetti. En route to their win, the Brazilian men posted the highest team total on floor (58.65), vault (62.80), and tied the US for 1st on rings (57.30).    The United States sent an entirely different team to Pan American Games than they sent to World Championships, and like Worlds, they ended up with the team bronze medal. However, if you take the US Pan American Games team's scores and stack them up with World Championships scoring, they would have finished a shocking 17th place as a team.    The US men had mistakes throughout the day including a fluke fall on floor from 2010 World team member Brandon Wynn, appearing to get lost in the air on a tumbling pass, an uncharacteristically poor pommel horse routine from CJ Maestas, and reigning NCAA parallel bars champion Tyler Mizoguchi did not deliver on his best event. The biggest dent in the US team total came on pommel horse where they totaled only a 52.40 with the highest score coming from newcomer Donothan Bailey at 13.90.     There were some bright spots for the US men including Paul Ruggeri on high bar and vault, Brandon Wynn and CJ Maestas on rings, and Sho Nakamori on parallel bars. Each of these routines will have a chance for medals in the event finals.  Below are the results for the 2011 Pan American Games Team Finals, and the complete list of gymnasts who will advance to individual all around and event finals. Due to meet rules, only two gymnasts per country may advance to finals.  TEAM FINALS RESULTS 1. Brazil 346.10 2. Puerto Rico 344.850 3. USA 342.00 4. Colombia 340.200 5. Canada 335.200 6.
